This is the geologic time scale throughout history. A part to the geologic time scale to start us off are major life changes throughout the eras, periods, and times. Another part of the geologic time scale is the record of life forms, and the way they changed. That was most of what the geologic time scale was.
How did scientist create the geologic time scale? Well they created it by using the age of the fossils. Also they used the study of rock layers and index fossils. These are two other reasons that scientist could have used to create the geologic time scale. They used the relative age of fossils. The other strategy is that they used radioactive aging to figure what time the fossils are from. Those are some of my hypotheses for how the scientist made the geologic time scale.
Scientists decide when an Era ends for two reasons. One is that they will start a new era or period if there is any major life changes. For example if there was another ice age they would start a new era. The other reason they would end an era or time period is if there was a mass extinction that was mediocre or larger. They would end an era or time period if there was a mass extinction like the one at the end of the Paleozoic era, and if you read about the section on the Paleozoic era you will find that after the mass extinction the era ended and lots of animals had died off. Those are some of the things you will need to know about the geologic time scale.
